於「Dear John Letter」，的是一位妻子或是情人寄信在海外服役的丈夫/男友，表示自己已另得良人，要求婚/分手的通知信。至於此故事的出已不可考，咸信是二期在美生的，而「Dear John Letter」也成了「分手信」的代名。

之後，由Billy Barton、Fuzzy OwenLewis Talley等三人共同作了此首《A Dear John Letter》，歌容流的故事大同小，而背景似乎是男友加「 (1950-1953)」，且特殊的是女主角要嫁的竟然是位John的兄弟。1953，由歌之一的Fuzzy Owen上一篇提到的Bonnie Owens唱行，但未入榜，反而被也是在同年行的Ferlin HuskyJean Shepard的版本唱，的Jean Shepard尚未20，成了最年的「冠女歌手」，此直到近20年後才被14的Tayna Tucker以一首《What's Your Mama's Name》打破。

1965，村歌手Skeeter DavisBobby Bare翻唱此曲，然只得村榜的第11名，是台歌友最熟悉的版本。推究原因，或是到60年代初，台才有多的家庭有唱，一些代的歌曲才被大量版引吧！

情人之通信，抬都用Honey或是Sweet之密的，忽然改成Dear，可就要特警惕了。又有女孩「I’m gonna write a dear John letter」，那她就是要信和男友分手了。
