首歌是由The Band（合唱）的吉他手Robbie Robertson和鼓手Levon Helm所共同作，於1969推出。述的是美南北南被打的那一晚，回溯史，是在1865年的5月10日。而「Dixie」是南方十一州邦的。
 

此曲於1971被民歌后Joan Baez翻唱，得了排行榜第五名的佳。而Joan Baez所唱的版本，有句歌和原唱不同，她告石的Kurt Loder，她在唱首歌，只有The Band的唱片，而未看面的歌，她只是就所到的唱（然是她或是的果），但由此也可其性不的性格。
 

有人，The Band的Levon Helm唱首歌的南方腔很味（我不）。我一始接的就是Joan Baze的版本，而且我她唱的起有些桑味，比符合歌曲所想表的悲氛。哈，青菜各有所好。
