是一首美流的通俗民，歌者已不可考，黑人民歌手Lead Belly於1933首先唱，他，首歌也是由他叔叔口中的。

位Lead Belly老兄於1918因企罪入，但因自己的歌寄典 ( 典也有自他唱 )，而被表良好，了最起的7年後於 1924得放。熟知位老兄於1930又因相同犯行罪名被，在3年後被人及音史者John Lomax和子Alan ( 父子人替Library of Congress---「」收集具史意的歌曲 ) ，Lead Belly的音描述美黑人的拼博，了史的一大，具有保存的值，也因而替Lead Belly成功。Lead Belly度因音自己重自由，也算是了。

Lead Belly於1949因「人症 (ALS)」病故，享年61。在他生前，他的此首《Irene》未致商上的成功。而在Lead Belly死後一年，美民The Weavers的版本在告示牌最佳售排行榜的冠座待了13。之後其他的翻唱者也不少，像是Jerry Lee Lewis、Johnny Cash、The Chieftains、Tom Waits 和 Peter, Paul and Mary等，而各自在歌上有些更。



此曲也被英足球Bristol Rovers的球迷作啦啦歌，原本只是1950在主Plymouth Argyle前放火播的歌曲，而在接下的比日，由於Bristol Rovers易就取得先，Plymouth Argyle一些球迷得球望而提前，因而被Bristol Rovers球迷嘲弄，以此曲唱出「Goodnight, Argyle」，自此沿唱迄今。
