Gray Lewis是美知名星Jerry Lewis的子。他在14收到的生日物是一套爵士鼓，想然耳的就起。18找了4朋友共，自是「Playboys」，而此名之後也一直未作更。但的主唱是吉他手而非Gray Lewis，或因如此，在出道，是由其母默默地出助，然其父Jerry Lewis不衷支持。

The Playboys去「迪斯耐」徵唱，Gray Lewis未表明其有名人父的身份。唱後多久，即相的受迎，也常座。此，唱片作人Snuff Garrett被Jerry Lewis多年的朋友Les Brown告知，年的Lewis在迪斯耐表演。在了他的演唱之後，Garrett或可利用Jerry Lewis的知名度多一些唱片，故要求Lewis的名字加在名之前，而成了「Gray Lewis & The Playboys」。
Garrett音室要首《This Diamond Ring》，依照Lewis的法，不能公任伴奏 ( 是囿於其他的合 )。怎？了保首歌的成功，Garrett找了一些知名的特作「手」。但的安排後也出了--- Garrett由Jerry Lewis的，安排上「利文 ( The Ed Sullivan Show )」，目一向的矩是要唱的，但些根本法出初音的伴奏效果 ( 其中也涉及了音的技巧 )。折，由Gray Lewis先自以伴唱唱好，大家只是嘴及假奏做子。
其首《This Diamond Ring》在稍早之前，是由Sammy Ambrose先行推出，但是Lewis的版本先入告示牌「Bubbling Under」排行榜 ( # 101 )，1965年1月，此版本同榜 ( Lewis仍持在 #101，而Ambrose是在 #117 )。接下，Ambrose跌出了榜外，而Lewis又另入了告示牌100的排行榜 ( # 65 )，然後一路攀升，到1965/2/20，已站上了100排行榜的冠位置。
Gray Lewis得大家常曲解了首歌的意思。他多人之所以喜首歌，是以是首情人地在一起的歌。甚至有人告他要婚了，就是因首《This Diamond Ring》，他回：真的？其他心想的是，是首分手歌哩！
