王靖宇《金的生平及其文批》的一些和翻 商榷
目:王靖宇(John C. Y. Wang)《金的生平及其文批》 (Chin Sheng-t’an: His Life and Literary Criticism) (修本中英文版 蓓芳 上海古籍出版社,2004)
本的容、制作和翻,都是今中一流水,值得喝采、敬。
不,我提出一些或可商榷,供大家。以下段例:
3. The grey line of a grass snake (,…). What Chin means by this technique seems to corresponded partially to a fashionable phrase in modern criticismthe “recurrent image.” That is to say, through the repeatitive but unobtrusive use of a key image or symbol the author succeeds in achieving a unity or a certain purpose in his work similar in that achieved in a symphony through the recurrence of a motif. The most notable example is the author’s effective use of the ‘club’ image throughout the Ching-yang Ridge scene, where Wu Sung subdues a huge tiger singlehandedly (chapter 22). The whole episode, together with Chin’s running comments, is translated in section V below. (p.284)
3.草蛇灰法。金此法所指,似乎代批中所流行的「意象(recurrent image)」部分相似。即作者通在其作品中反而又不露痕地使用某一意象或象徵,成功地到某和效果,如交中由某一基的重出所到的和效果一。最突出的例子是在武松景立制服巨虎(第22回)的整景中,作者於「哨棒」一意象的有效使用。整段文字同金的一串,在下文……(65)
我的建:原文的running comments,考改用英文用 running commentary。 【按:running commentary noun [C] (a) continuous description of events as they are happening或a description of an event, usually a sports event, given at the same time as it happens】
本它翻成「一串」,或可考「一套」。
「意象(recurrent image)」的翻,似乎有,因「主」(motif)(蓓芳翻「基」)的反出,可能「」。
又,此「部分相似」(corresponded partially),在附I 的文中(Appendix I),成READILY TRANLATABLE。
recurrent image和’COMIC RELIEF”【p.382/p.147 喜性穿插】等,在索引中都找不到。
又,第147中,於慈John Keats於1817年所用的著名用Negative Capability,竟然翻成「否定能力」而又注,不妥【大於Keats的和信集,此都有解明】。【上文登出後,同天我再第二章pp.38-9,原意有解(附英文);英文有此索引而中文缺。此索引不精,如用西方方法都相互指引。】
