源自古法语 sutilte，再追溯至拉丁语 subtilitas，由 subtilis 演变而来，原意为"精细的、薄的"。拉丁语中 sub（在…之下）+ tela（织物）组合，最初形容织物非常精细，后来引申为"微妙的、不易察觉的"。英语中的字母 b 是后来为了更贴近拉丁语拼写而加入的，实际发音中不发音。
