In a stunning upset, Yen-Hsun Lu defeated Andy Roddick in a prizefight of a match, winning 9-7 in the fifth set. Lu showed remarkable composure in the win, competing at an extraordinarily high level throughout the nearly five-hour match. He won the match more than Roddick lost it, hitting out freely as the pressure mounted in the fifth set.
Roddick looked to be in deep trouble in the fourth set tiebreaker, trailing love-3. He somehow escaped with great serving and a few tight-looking shots from Lu. In the fifth, however, Lu held with authority and seemed utterly comfortable with the idea of beating Roddick. He continually played to win, attacking at every opportunity. Roddick fought hard, but kept waiting for Lu to falter. The match began to take on the feel of the marathon between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, with each player holding serve easily, but Lu broke through in the 16th game to win.
Historically, this is a day of upsets, but few pundits would have predicted that Lu, ranked 82nd in the world, would beat Roddick, who lost in the final last year despite a heroic effort against Roger Federer. Lu, a 26-year-old from Taiwan, played with an assuredness that belied his inexperience this deep in a Grand Slam. In his last four Wimbledons, he’d lost in the first round and he has never gotten further than the second. He advances to play Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
